Department of Thoracic Surgery

The Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai blends innovative research, patient care, and comprehensive education. Established in 2014, our Department has become a cornerstone of the Mount Sinai Health System’s world-class thoracic care. One of only a few of its kind in the nation, the Department of Thoracic Surgery focuses on conditions of the lung, esophagus, mediastinum, and chest wall, and the full range of minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat them. Under the leadership of Raja M. Flores, MD, we are committed to excelling trainees in the field—offering two programs for exceptional thoracic surgeons: the Integrated Thoracic Residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Independent Thoracic Fellowship.

Trainees in our programs work alongside a team of experienced thoracic surgeons. Our Department's excellence is nationally recognized, as evidenced by our three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for esophageal cancer surgery, the only such rating in the New York tri-state area. Beyond clinical care, we are committed to addressing health care disparities and improving community health. This commitment is reflected in our research program, which includes a database of over 2,800 thoracic surgeries. This valuable resource drives our investigations into critical areas such as lung cancer, mesothelioma treatments, and disparities in thoracic cancer care, ensuring that our Department remains at the forefront of both specialized care and scientific discovery.
