Flow Cytometry

The Flow Cytometry Laboratory consists of hematopathologists, technologists, and state-of-the-art instrumentation, all dedicated to providing the best possible care for our patients.

Our laboratory offers clinical services such as stem cell quantitation, lymphocyte subsets quantitation and malignant leukocyte immunophenotyping. Flow cytometry staff members are also available to answer questions and provide analyses for research projects.

The laboratory operates under a permit from the New York State Department of Health. We are also accredited by the College of American Pathologists and certified by the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to process samples from all Division of AIDS studies.

We provide the following services:

Stem Cell Quantitation

We perform the enumeration of CD34+ stem cells for hematopoietic stem cell transplants, with a fast turn-around time, usually within two hours after receiving the sample. To facilitate the expedited processing, you must collect peripheral blood in a green top (Sodium Heparin) tube OR lavender top tube (EDTA) and deliver it to our laboratory at 18-24°C as quickly as possible. Place apheresis products in a tube without anticoagulant and deliver immediately to the laboratory at 18-24°C.

Further information about the test is provided in the link below. Use the keywords “CD34 STEM CELL COUNT [MSHS/867]” on the link provided

Lymphocyte Subset Quantitation

These assays can be ordered to quantitate the percentage and number of lymphocytes including CD4 T-cells, CD8 T-cells, B-cells and NK-cells. We have three variations of this test. With “LIMITED T4”, we provide only the percentage and number of CD4+ T cells; with “BASIC T CELL”, we provide the percentage and number of total T cells (CD3+), CD4 T cells and CD8 T cells. Finally, we have “LYMPH SCRN W/NK/B CELLS” to provide the number and percentage of total T cells (CD3+), CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells, B cells and NK cells.

Test information, including sample submission instructions, are provided in the link below. Use the keywords “LIMITED T4 [MSHS/841]”, “BASIC T CELL [MSHS/842]” and “LYMPH SCRN W/NK/B CELLS [MSHS/843]” to look up these tests.

Leukemia/Lymphoma Immunophenotyping

We perform typing of peripheral blood, bone marrow aspirates, various fluids, tissues, and fine needle aspirates with a fast turnaround time. Our laboratory's experienced hematopathologists review and interpret the immunophenotyping results. We can process STAT samples processed within two to three hours.

Place peripheral blood and bone marrow aspirates in green, lavender, pink or yellow top tubes and deliver to our laboratory at 18-24°C as quickly as possible. Place tissues and fine needle aspirates in sterile tissue culture media, and collect fluids in sterile containers.

After hour drop-off:

  • Please place peripheral blood and bone marrow aspirates in the blue bin on the counter in the laboratory room.
  • Please place CSF, FNA, LN, and soft tissue samples in the bin in the refrigerator.
  • For RUSH samples, please email # Flowcytometry and # Hematopathology to let us know about the sample so that we can ensure that it is prioritized.
  • Please do not leave the specimen with any employee who does not work in the Flow Cytometry Lab.

Please download and fill out the requisition form in the link below. Deliver the specimen along with the filled requisition form to the flow cytometry laboratory.
