Physicians at the Milton and Carroll Petrie Department of Urology continue to innovate and expand treatment options for patients with prostate cancer. Our Precision Urology™ approach involves integration of multiple variables and imaging data for diagnosis and treatment decision making, so patients with prostate cancer can be assured of our commitment to comprehensive and personalized care.
Ash Tewari, MBBS, MCh, FRCS, Chairman of the Department of Urology, is a leader in robotic prostate surgery, considered among the best robotic prostate cancer surgeons in the world. He has performed more than 5,500 robotic prostatectomies, making him one of the most experienced robotic surgeons. In order to minimize the damage to the nerves responsible for erectile function, Dr. Tewari pioneered the performance of a completely athermal technique (no use of cautery or heat energy) during robotic prostatectomy. Also, he developed the total reconstruction technique, in which the support structures of the urinary mechanism are restored following prostate removal, for faster continence recovery.
Mount Sinai Health System is at the forefront of diagnostic imaging for prostate cancer, specifically ultrasound guided fusion biopsy. We are one of two test centers in the world collaborating with Philips Health Care and helping refine fusion biopsy technology and developing applications for guided focal therapies.
Cystectomy and urinary diversion are considered the most complicated oncology surgeries in urology. Our Robotic Bladder Cancer Program is led by N. Peter Wiklund, PhD, who has the most experience in the world with robot-assisted cystectomy with totally intracorporeal neobladder. He has performed more than 3,000 robotic operations and has extensive experience in advanced pelvic oncological surgery in patients where the tumor is growing on several pelvic organs (multi-organ tumor, bladder, prostate, colorectal, ovarian, uterine).
Our Comprehensive Kidney Cancer and Robotic Kidney Cancer Surgery Program is led by Ketan Badani, MD, Vice Chairman of Urology and Robotic Operations for the Mount Sinai Health System and Director of Robotic Surgery for Mount Sinai, Mount Sinai Morningside, and Mount Sinai West. Dr. Badani is a leader in the research and treatment of urologic cancers. He is one of the preeminent practitioners for robotic partial nephrectomy for complex kidney tumors. His technique, the F.A.S.T. procedure (First Assistant Sparing Technique), has been published and taught around the world to treat patients with renal tumors.
The Comprehensive Kidney Cancer Program is multidisciplinary and collaborative with our colleagues in Nephrology, Interventional Radiology, and Medical Oncology. When appropriate, we also will use ablation or put patients on an active surveillance protocol.
The Department of Urology offers the latest, minimally invasive technologies and treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), including holium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), Greenlight ™ Laser PVP treatment, and bipolar cautery vaporization (Button Transurethral Resection of the Prostate TURP), in addition to TURP. The UroLift System is a new minimally invasive device designed to treat lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to BPH and is available at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The Department of Urology provides comprehensive resources for the evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence; neuro-urological problems caused by diseases such as multiple sclerosis and diabetes; and pelvic pain syndrome for both men and women. Our specialists are among the few in the country with advanced training in urethral reconstruction.
The Mount Sinai Sexual Health Program uses the most advanced techniques available to evaluate the underlying hormonal, neurogenic, vascular, and psychogenic causes of sexual dysfunction. Treatment options include oral medications, hormone replacement therapy, counseling, intraurethral medication, injection therapy, external vacuum therapy, penile prosthesis, and reconstructive surgery.
The Kidney Stone Center at Mount Sinai offers a multidisciplinary approach to manage and treat kidney stones. Our integrated team of urologists, nephrologists, and other specialists have specialized expertise and experience with a wide range of noninvasive and minimally invasive procedures to remove small and large stones. Led by Mantu Gupta, MD, who has pioneered many of the methods and strategies currently used to manage and treat kidney stones, our Center uses the latest technological advances, including state-of-the-art lasers.
Our state-of-the-art use of medications, in vitro fertilization techniques, and microsurgical repairs have resulted in high success rates.
We excel in treating urologic problems in newborns, infants, children, and adolescents. The Division of Pediatric Urology, led by Jeffrey Stock, MD, offers the latest minimally invasive treatments, including robotic-assisted surgery for major reconstructive procedures.
