Master of Science in Biostatistics Admissions

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, statisticians are among the fastest growing professions in the United States. If you are ready to embark on the next phase of your career, our Master of Science in Biostatistics program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will advance you on this path. The Master of Science in Biostatistics curriculum offers two program tracks with different admissions requirements for each track. Both tracks require that 34 credits be completed in one, full-time academic year.

For the Theory and Methods Track, admissions eligibility include:

  • At least two semesters of college-level calculus with grade of B or higher
  • At least one college-level linear algebra course with grade of B or higher

For the Clinical Applications Track, admissions eligibility include:

  • You must be actively involved in clinical research and have a degree in medical sciences
  • At least one semester of college-level calculus with grade of B or higher
  • At least one college-level linear algebra course with grade of B or higher

Admission Requirements

For admissions to either track, please submit the following:

  • A completed application and $80 application fee (fee may be waived upon request)
  • Current curriculum vitae or resume
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate programs attended
  • Two letters of recommendation to be emailed by recommenders directly to admissions@mssm.edu
  • GRE scores are not required, but can be submitted as proof of preparedness (School Code 2464)

Application Deadline and Decisions

We begin accepting applications in September for enrollment the following year. Our final application deadline is July 1 for the upcoming semester. 

You will receive a comprehensive evaluation for admission based on your academic record, post-undergraduate professional experiences, and motivation for successful completion of the program. Women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply.

International Students

We encourage applications from qualified individuals, regardless of country of origin or where you received your academic and research training. Graduates from foreign colleges or universities who have completed an academic program equivalent to an American bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply. Following both government and school regulated processes, admissions requirements include:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or testing equivalent with a score of 100 or higher, or equivalent (such as IELTS, CAE, PTE), only if you are from a non-English-speaking country and did not earn a degree from an English-speaking university or curriculum. Applicants submitting IELTS scores (minimum score of 7.5) must send them directly to our admissions office at the following address:

  • Transcripts from colleges and universities outside the United States and Canada must be evaluated and translated by World Education Services or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The Master of Science in Biostatistics program requires a total of 34 credits to be completed for graduation. Tuition is $1,250 per credit; however, tuition costs may change annually.

Accepted applicants who are U.S. citizens or eligible residents and are interested in pursuing federal loans must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). As a direct lending institution, we also offer Federal Stafford Loans (Unsubsidized and Graduate PLUS loans) to students. In addition, all students can consider a monthly payment plan option through our provider.
