PhD Application Assistance and Advisory Program

We recognize that applicants have different support opportunities during the graduate admissions process. Cultivating a diverse student body and providing equitable opportunities for our future researchers and medical leaders is a fundamental goal for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Students who have limited access to educational resources and hands-on research opportunities, lack mentorship or guidance in navigating the academic and research landscape, or are socioeconomically disadvantaged scholars, can take advantage of our dedicated resources to support their PhD application efforts through the PhD Application Assistance and Advisory Program (PAAAP). PAAAP is designed to narrow the gap for underserved students pursuing a PhD in our Biomedical Sciences or Neuroscience programs.

The program offers assistance for eligible students through workshops and mock PhD interviews with Graduate School faculty. Events are scheduled ahead of the admissions cycle during Mount Sinai’s SINAI4US research symposium, a two-day virtual event taking placing on October 12 - 13, 2023. Registration for SINAI4US is required in order to participate in PAAAP sessions.

Students who are eligible for PAAAP enjoy exclusive sessions at the SINAI4US research symposium, including:

  • Workshops on how to prepare a competitive PhD application
  • Application feedback and 1 to 1 individualized advisement from faculty*
  • Mock PhD interviews with faculty*

The application deadline is September 15, 2023, at 5 pm. Students will be notified of their acceptance on September 29. Program sessions will take place on the morning of Friday, October 13, and all accepted registrants are welcome to attend. Individual (1:1) sessions with faculty will take place between October 16 - November 17, 2023.

*Please note that the feedback sessions and mock interviews will be subject to availability, and limited to PAAAP participants applying for the 2023-24 admissions cycle of the PhD Programs in Biomedical Sciences and Neuroscience at Icahn Mount Sinai.
