PhD in Health Sciences Engineering

The PhD in Health Sciences Engineering is a unique, immersive program designed to cultivate future leaders and entrepreneurs who bridge the gap between engineering and medicine. Jointly offered by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, our students gain experience in developing high-impact biomedical solutions, translating scientific discovery into clinical practice, and driving advancements that improve patient outcomes. Our PhD candidates also learn interdisciplinary communication skills and practice high ethical standards, particularly in the context of human health.

By combining rigorous coursework in engineering and medicine with hands-on experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, our aim is to equip students with the skills to solve society’s most intractable diseases. In our five-year program, we offer PhD students multidisciplinary mentorship with experts in the field, as well as opportunities to work on real-world projects while collaborating with leading researchers, clinicians, and industry partners.

Our unique first year involves immersion in engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, followed by a training in entrepreneurship at the Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine and clinical shadowing at Icahn Mount Sinai. These immersions create a translational mindset at the outset of the program that is reinforced by internships with industry partners and participation in grand rounds.

Our students engage in four modular core courses on fundamental approaches in precision medicine with an emphasis on engineering design, translation, and commercialization. They also take BioDesign and Inventor Studio courses in which they identify unmet health needs, use engineering design approaches to invent technologies to address these needs, and devise strategies to implement those solutions in a target market.

About Our Partnership

The Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine represents a collaboration between Icahn Mount Sinai and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Recognizing the pivotal role of engineering in advancing biomedical research, our shared goal is to bring together—and train—a diverse team of experts who create innovative solutions to complex health challenges. The Center's primary areas of focus include immunoengineering, neuroengineering, and regenerative and reparative medicine.
