Research

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital emphasizes academic development through personalized mentoring and extensive research opportunities. Fellows collaborate closely with Mount Sinai faculty who serve as editors of major cardiovascular journals, including the Journal of American College of Cardiology, gaining invaluable experience in medical writing and research publication.

To ensure research success, our fellows receive comprehensive support, including dedicated biostatisticians, Institutional Review Board counselors, and funding for conference attendance at major scientific meetings. Our robust research infrastructure provides regular methodology training in trial design, epidemiology, and biostatistics, complemented by quarterly newsletters highlighting new opportunities. Through a personalized mentorship program, fellows are paired with experienced researchers who guide them in grant applications and manuscript development.

At the heart of our research program is the Cardiovascular Research Institute at Mount Sinai, our hub for fundamental and translational cardiovascular science. The Institute houses more than a dozen laboratories conducting research across a broad spectrum of cardiovascular medicine. Our research portfolio encompasses fundamental investigations into atherosclerosis mechanisms, myocardial infarction, myocarditis, and heart failure, as well as innovative studies exploring how lifestyle factors affect cardiovascular health. The Institute is also at the forefront of developing new therapeutic approaches, including applications of nanotechnology and genetic medicine, providing fellows with exposure to the most advanced research methodologies in cardiovascular medicine.

Fellow Research Experience

The research experience at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital follows a carefully structured progression across all three years of fellowship.

During their first year, fellows begin by identifying research interests and matching with appropriate mentors who will guide their academic development. With mentor support, fellows develop their research proposals, prepare IRB submissions, and begin building their foundation in research methodology through participation in conferences and journal clubs.

As fellows progress into their second year, they advance to presenting their work at research forums and submitting abstracts to major conferences. This year focuses on manuscript development and grant writing skills, with fellows receiving guidance in preparing applications for funding opportunities. Advanced research methodology training continues throughout the year, building on the foundational knowledge established in year one.

The third year culminates in the completion of research projects, manuscript publications, and presentations at national conferences. Fellows receive comprehensive support in career development and preparation for faculty positions, ensuring they are well positioned for successful academic careers. Throughout all three years, fellows participate in weekly research activities, including journal clubs led by leading cardiovascular researchers, research methodology curricula, multi-modality conferences, "Controversies in Cardiology" sessions, and case presentations. This combination of structured research progression and ongoing educational activities ensures fellows develop into well-rounded physician-scientists.
