Curriculum

  1. Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital Center

The fellowship curriculum balances clinical training, academic conferences, and research opportunities across three years. Fellows complete rotations in all major cardiovascular subspecialties at both hospital sites, participate in daily didactic sessions, and engage in clinical and translational research projects. The program structure provides hands-on experience with diverse patient populations and complex cardiac cases.

Meet the Program Director

Cardiac Catheterization

Fellows develop proficiency in venous and arterial access, interpretation of coronary angiograms and hemodynamics, assessment and management of acute coronary syndromes, and mechanical support devices. Fellows gain first-hand understanding of evaluating patients for cardiac catheterization, the appropriate indications, and perform supervised diagnostic procedures.

Echocardiography and Nuclear Cardiology

After developing foundational knowledge and skill of adult echocardiography and nuclear cardiology at Elmhurst Hospital Center, our fellows come to The Mount Sinai Hospital to further their exposure.  In echocardiography, they are exposed to complex surgical and structural cases, gain an in-depth understanding of advanced techniques in both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, and provide supportive services to the electrophysiology and interventional cardiology teams. In nuclear cardiology, they are exposed to the use of all pharmacologic vasodilators, read equilibrium gated radionuclide scans in addition to amyloid and perfusion studies, gain an understanding of cadmium zinc telluride cameras, and participate in the performance of cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Electrophysiology

Training in this area emphasizes diagnosing and managing complex cardiac arrhythmias through consultative services. Our fellows also explore device interrogation and programming, with hands-on exposure to invasive and noninvasive evaluation techniques.

Vascular Medicine

In their second and third years, our fellows receive comprehensive training in vascular disease management through a collaborative approach with vascular surgery, interventional radiology, peripheral interventional cardiology, rheumatology, neurology, and neuroradiology. Training includes time in outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, and the vascular diagnostic laboratory, with exposure to endovascular and surgical procedures.

Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation

Fellows rotate through the consultative heart failure service, academic inpatient heart failure service, and LVAD/heart transplantation service throughout their three years. Fellows participate in advanced heart transplantation meetings with cardiology and cardiovascular surgery faculty. Our fellows develop an understanding for transplant evaluation, temporary mechanical support, and post-transplant care, preparing them for complex patient scenarios.

Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit

Second- and third-year fellows manage post-cardiac surgery patients following heart transplants, mechanical circulatory device implantation, and complex valve surgeries. They serve as the primary cardiologist on teams with critical care intensivists, anesthesiologists, and cardiac surgeons.

Cardiac CT and MRI

Fellows learn about the appropriate indications for and interpretation of cardiac CT and MRI through didactic sessions and interpretation and manipulation of images, including calcium scoring, coronary computed tomographic angiography, and cardiovascular magnetic resonance for cardiac function assessment.

Adult Congenital

In their second and third year of training, our fellows rotate through the adult congenital heart center, participating in weekly clinic sessions evaluating adult congenital heart disease patients at all levels of complexity. Training includes exposure to dedicated multi-modality imaging in coronary heart disease, including echocardiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance, and computed tomography angiography imaging. Fellows may also participate in the congenital cardiac catheterization suite and specialized multidisciplinary clinics focusing on single ventricle Fontan patients and high-risk pregnancy management.

Dr. Halperin's Service

Fellows rotate with Jonathan Halperin, MD, during their second and third years on his inpatient service and outpatient clinic, seeing patients transferred from Elmhurst Hospital Center for advanced therapies.

Cardiology CT Fellowship - Site Breakdown

Clinical rotations at the Elmhurst Hospital Center include:

Cardiology Consult Service

Fellows serve on the cardiology consultative service, acting as consultants for electrophysiology, advanced heart failure, cardiac imaging, and general cardiology questions. Teaching opportunities with residents and medical students are integrated throughout this rotation.

Cardiac Care Unit

Fellows lead teams of residents, medical students, and nurse practitioners in managing a nine-bed cardiac care unit and six-bed cardiology stepdown unit with an attending cardiologist.

Cardiac Catheterization

Fellows serve as first assist for diagnostic right and left heart catheterizations, percutaneous coronary interventions, peripheral interventions, and STEMIs, developing procedural skills in interventional cardiology.

Cardiac Imaging

Fellows work closely with echocardiography faculty, receiving one-on-one training and guidance. Fellows also rotate through the nuclear cardiology lab.

Outpatient Clinic

Fellows maintain continuity clinic exposure throughout their three years, seeing high volumes of patients with complex cardiac cases. Subspecialty clinic exposure includes cardio-obstetrics and advanced heart failure and transplantation with Dr. Cagliostro.

Although the primary mission of The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital Center is to provide a robust and diverse clinical experience, our training program actively encourages and fosters the academic development of our trainees through personalized mentoring and extensive research opportunities. Fellows collaborate with Mount Sinai and Elmhurst Hospital Center faculty on a variety of projects spanning all areas of cardiovascular medicine. Additionally, they work with faculty who serve as editors of major cardiovascular journals, including the Journal of American College of Cardiology, gaining experience in medical writing and research publication.

Our fellows are supported in their research endeavors with funding for conference attendance at major scientific meetings and participate in a curriculum which regularly reviews methodology of trial design, epidemiology, and biostatistics, complemented by quarterly newsletters highlighting new opportunities. Mentorship is provided at every stage of a fellow’s training to understand individual areas of interest and ensure that the research projects appropriately match each fellow’s career trajectory. Finally, interested and eligible fellows may participate in our NIH T32 Training Grant program. There are six funded positions available for 1 to 2 years of dedicated research for those fellows whose professional goals align with this opportunity.
