The Center for Advanced Medical Simulation provides a policy guide for our faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Attire

Please wear clinically appropriate attire, no open toe shoes or sandals, as there are needles and other sharp objects in the Center. 

Food and Beverages

Food and drink are not permitted in our simulation labs or arcade. If you are catering a course, please contact our simulation center to assist you with planning and logistics. 

Respectful Environment

Please leave the spaces as you found them (clear trash, food, put tables back in their proper layout, etc). 

Cameras, Photography & Recordings

Cameras are located throughout the simulation center and may be on at any time. Recordings or photographs will not be published without expressed consent of the participants. 

Medication Safety

All medications in the simulation lab are for sim use only and are labeled as such. Do not remove medications and bring them into the clinical environment. 

In Case of Emergency

Stop all simulation activities immediately and announce “this is not part of the simulation, call for help”. 

Learning spaces are considered non-clinical spaces and do not provide all necessary equipment for clinical care. Please follow our institutional policies in regards to requesting immediate medical assistance.

Cancellation Policy

By agreeing to the Terms of Use of the simulation center, departments agree to provide notice of cancellation at least one week before the intended course start date. This allows CAMS an opportunity to reallocate time and modify staffing requirements with minimal disruption. The relevant department will handle individual learner cancellations. However, if multiple individual cancellations make it impossible to conduct a course that successfully meets the predefined learning objectives, it is the responsibility of the department head to contact the simulation center to discuss cancellation and rescheduling. 

Psychological Safety

Psychological safety refers to the perception and feeling within a simulation-based activity that the participants are comfortable participating in, speaking up, sharing thoughts, taking a risk to make mistakes considered as learning opportunities, and asking for help as needed without concern for retribution or embarrassment. (SSH, 2016, Healthcare Simulation Dictionary, 29). 

Create a safe learning environment where the simulation educator(s) and participants identify and explore errors, encourage to ask questions, reinforce positive behaviors, and reward novelty. 

Participants are provided an orientation before their simulation encounter in part to decrease anxiety, improve comfort level with the experience, and focus them on the goals of the exercise. For our full policy on psychological safety please contact the Director of Simulation Education.
