Appointments

The Center offers a multidisciplinary approach to recovery from complex chronic illness, including medical treatments, nutritional support, lifestyle modifications, and mental health support to address all aspects of your condition.

We only see patients who live in the states of New York and New Jersey.

During your appointment, our technicians will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your health and review your medical history. As a patient, you will complete several steps throughout the duration of your care.

The first step includes preliminary testing with our technicians. After testing is complete, the data will be sent to your physician here at the Center, and you will be contacted for a follow-up appointment to discuss the results. In some cases, the team may reach out to you for additional testing before your follow-up is scheduled. Once at your appointment, the physician will work with you to establish a plan of care that best suits your needs.

All staff at the Center will mask during appointments and assessments. We recognize the need to mitigate the spread of airborne pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 and prevent reinfection. The Center also has infection prevention infrastructure that includes HEPA filters and germicidal far-UV light technology, which rapidly remove viruses and other aerosols from the air.

No, you do not need to stop taking your current medications and supplements before your appointment. The primary goal of the physical assessment initial intake is to understand where your symptoms are, in the moment. The assessments help us understand, regardless of medications you may be taking, if your body is still showing signs of autonomic, metabolic, cognitive, or endothelial dysfunction.

The Cohen Center for Recovery from Complex Chronic Illness is within the Mount Sinai Health System. Insurance coverage varies by plan and provider. Please contact your insurance company directly to inquire about coverage for our services.

If you miss your appointment, please notify us as soon as possible. We will be able to reschedule so you may continue your care. As with any scheduled appointments, these times are considered when the doctor maps out your care plan. With that in mind, please provide notice as soon as possible if you anticipate missing your appointment. To better assist you with keeping your appointment, we will also send confirmations and reminders ahead of your visit with us.

If you are too ill to attend an in-person appointment, please contact us to discuss alternative arrangements. Depending on your location and/or circumstances, you may be able to complete your visit at home or via an online consultation. We want you to be comfortable and safe.

Testing and Assessments

Patients will be required to take their masks off for the resting metabolic rate and Valsalva tests. Patients are given the option to refuse the test if they do not feel comfortable for the resting metabolic rate assessment and the Valsalva tests.

Cognitive function testing involves evaluating how well your brain is functioning. Some examples of these areas include memory, language skills, visual processing, attention, and decision-making. These tests are non-invasive (meaning surgery is not needed).

Autonomic function testing involves evaluating how well your body regulates its internal organs. This area of regulation, referred to as the autonomic nervous system, includes elements such as your breathing, digestion, heart rate, and body temperature. These tests are non-invasive (meaning surgery is not needed).

Metabolic function testing involves evaluating how well your body converts its incoming nutrients into energy. It also evaluates the chemical composition of your body. For example, this is how you learn about hormone levels, protein, electrolytes, organ function, etc. These tests are non-invasive (meaning surgery is not needed).

Endothelial function testing involves evaluating how well the blow flows through your arteries. The endothelium refers to the lining of the blood vessels, and testing highlights how well the lining responds to stimulation. These tests are non-invasive (meaning surgery is not needed).

Comprehensive assessments are essential to understanding your unique health condition and ensuring that you receive the most accurate diagnosis and/or effective treatment plan when you see the doctor. We want to give you the opportunity to provide your doctor with the most information so they have everything they need to treat you with the highest care.

The results of your assessments provide detailed information about your physical and mental health, which helps our team create a customized treatment plan for you. Specific interpretations of each assessment will be explained during your follow-up consultation.

This is up to you. When new results are ready, your doctor will upload them to your MyChart and send you a message for review. Once you have viewed your results, you will have the option to link health systems from your other doctors so they can also have access. Alternatively, you can always save your results as a PDF and print for sharing as well.
