Bernard Sachs, MD, publishes the first description in the United States of Familial Amaurotic Idiocy, now known as Tay-Sachs disease.

Henry Koplik, MD, publishes the first description of spots on the mucous membrane lining the cheeks and lips, a diagnostic sign in measles now known as Koplik’s spots.

Edwin Beer, MD, develops the first cystoscope for children and continues his pioneering work in pediatric urology.

Frederick S. Mandelbaum, MD, publishes original work on splenomegaly (Gaucher disease). In a 1913 article with Nathan Brill, MD, he suggests adopting the term “Gaucher disease” to describe the condition.

The first group of residents graduate from the Department of Pediatrics.

Samuel Karelitz, MD, and Bela Schick, MD, advocate for continuous intravenous fluid administration to combat infant dehydration, as opposed to intermittent infusion, resulting in reduced mortality rates by 75 percent.

Horace Hodes, MD, becomes the first full-time Director of Pediatrics for The Mount Sinai Hospital. Two decades later, he is named the Herbert H. Lehman Professor of Pediatrics.

Mount Sinai establishes the Adolescent Health Center as the first primary care program in New York specifically designed for the health needs of adolescents.

Kurt Hirschhorn, MD, becomes the original The Arthur J. and Nellie Z. Cohen Professor of Pediatrics (Genetics). A year later, he heads the Department of Pediatrics’ Clinical Genetics Research Center—one of seven National Institutes of Health-funded centers in the country.

The Adolescent Health Center creates the first pediatric fellowship in adolescent care.

The Department of Pediatrics becomes the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics.

Mount Sinai’s Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics create a five-year Triple Board residency-training program for work in Pediatrics, General Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

The Mount Sinai Children’s Center Foundation is established.

Frederick J. Suchy, MD, an internationally renowned pediatric hepatologist, is appointed Chair of Pediatrics.

Mount Sinai establishes the Elliot and Roslyn Jaffe Food Allergy Institute. The Institute is a pioneer in comprehensive diagnostics and is directed by Hugh A. Sampson, MD, a world leader in food allergy research.

Bruce Gelb, MD, and colleagues identify the first gene causing Noonan syndrome when mutated. Noonan syndrome is the most common non-chromosomal genetic disorder with congenital heart defects.

Using combined liver-kidney transplantation, physicians at The Mount Sinai Hospital develop and carry out the first-ever successful treatment for atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Mount Sinai becomes the first in New York State to use the Berlin Heart pump to keep a pediatric patient alive for two weeks before heart transplantation. The pump remains experimental in the United States.

The Mount Sinai School of Medicine (now the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai) is selected by the National Institutes of Health as one of 22 new research centers for the National Children’s Study.

The Mount Sinai Parenting Center is launched with the goal of transforming the way pediatric health care is delivered by maximizing strong parent-child relationships.

The Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program opens. Situated within the Susan and Leonard Feinstein Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical Center, the Program is co-directed by Marla Dubinsky, MD, Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology.

The Food Allergy Treatment and Research Center is established to provide safe, effective, and data-driven therapies, while studying personalized approaches to food allergy treatment for the future.

The Department establishes the Development Program for Underserved Children, with the goal of launching a targeted, coordinated enterprise to ensure the health, well-being, and unlimited potential of those living in the neighborhoods we serve.

Led by Bruce Gelb, MD, the Precision Medicine Program is launched by The Mindich Child Health and Development Institute to offer state-of the-art genomic testing for fetal and newborn diagnostics, pediatric undiagnosed disorders, inborn errors of immunity, and pediatric “predictive” medicine.

The Department welcomes three dogs as “full-time” employees through the Paws and Play Faculty Dog Program.

Mount Sinai Health System establishes the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Program, welcoming nine new pediatric hospitalists.

The Department of Emergency Medicine launches the Pediatric Short Stay Unit at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, the only pediatric observation-level unit in New York City dedicated to caring for children with acute illnesses.

In partnership with the Pediatric Short Stay Unit and the Mobile Acute Care Team, the Pediatric Visiting Doctors and Complex Care Program is launched.  Directed by Czer Anthoney Lim, MD, it provides an inpatient level of care at home for pediatric patients.

In line with our commitment to heart health at Mount Sinai Children's Heart Center, the Mount Sinai Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center is recognized as a Comprehensive Care Center by the Adult Congenital Heart Association.

Launch of the Healthy Lifestyle Clinic from the Pediatric Endocrinology Department.
