Message From the Chair

In every aspect of its core mission, the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is revolutionizing the road ahead. Through our trailblazing research, our relentless pursuit of life-changing care, and our rigorous, collaborative training of the next generation, we are propelling psychiatry toward a truly transformational future for the patients we serve.

The Mount Sinai-Behavioral Health Center that opened in 2023 both embodies and elevates our mission. As the largest private investment in mental health in the history of New York, this groundbreaking center reimagines behavioral health care, integrating services for substance use, primary care needs, and mental health in a single, elegantly designed space. As a part of this new model of care, we offer every patient the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research.

Indeed, research is foundational to everything we accomplish together in the Department of Psychiatry. Continuously ranked in the top 10 in National Institute of Heath funding, in 2023, the Department received $70 million in active grants, and we publish, on average, more than 600 papers each year. Our faculty is made up of 130 dedicated researchers, which as of 2023 includes seven appointments to the National Academy of Medicine and two appointments to the National Academy of Science. Our dynamic research portfolio, which encompasses more than 60 centers, laboratories, and programs, is growing in depth and translational promise. As part of Icahn Mount Sinai, the academic powerhouse of the Mount Sinai Health System, we are ideally positioned to translate our discoveries into real patient care outcomes.

Our Department also offers exceptional training opportunities; whether your goals involve advancing patient treatment or research breakthroughs, our programs will prepare you to move the field of mental health forward. We provide a wide range of residences in general and specialty areas. Our psychiatry clerkship is continuously ranked the highest rated clerkship by our medical education students, which further reflects our dedication to providing the best training at every level.

In partnership with the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, the Mount Sinai Department of Psychiatry has established a psychiatry-specific, system-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Steering Committee. This committee meets regularly to move the needle on recruiting and retaining a racially and ethnically diverse faculty, cultivating a learning environment in which we are continually improving equity and inclusion, and enhancing our knowledge and responsiveness regarding social determinants of mental health.

We have accomplished so much, and yet, we are just getting started.
