Occupational Exposures and Injuries

Blood Body Fluid Exposure (BBFE) / Needlestick / Puncture Wound

In the event of a medical student exposure to blood or body fluid:

  1. Wash the area with soap and water. For mucous membrane exposure (eyes, nose, mouth), flush with water.

  2. Report to Nurse Manager or Nurse Administrator on unit where exposure occurred. They will assist you in completing the Accident/Injury Report form and initiating source patient testing.

  3. Present to a BBFE evaluation site.
    1. ISMMS Students: Go to the location specified for your clinical location (see list below) for immediate care.
    2. Visiting Students: Go directly to the Emergency Department at the hospital where you are rotating.

  4. Obtain a Discharge Summary to review with the SHC Team

  5. Contact the Student Health Center (SHC) to report your case, review questions, and for follow-up:
