Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs

For over two decades, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has demonstrated unwavering commitment to fostering a climate of inclusivity and diversity. In 1998, we established the Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, guided by the resolute leadership of Gary C. Butts, MD, to champion academic excellence, holistic development, and enduring growth for a generation of aspiring medical scholars from underserved racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Today our office is known as The Patricia S. Levinson Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, named after a longstanding trustee and devoted supporter of our work. We are one of three units of the Mount Sinai Health System’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion, where we work collectively to advance diversity and inclusion across New York State’s largest academic health system. We have evolved into becoming Icahn Mount Sinai’s longstanding diversity center. Our commitment is to use a systems-change approach to cultivate, integrate, and advance the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the work and learning environments at Icahn Mount Sinai. Our efforts include:

  • Strong, multi-faceted partnerships with local community organizations that allow integration of community-oriented care, research, and service learning.
  • Teaching and instructional opportunities to educationally and economically disadvantaged youth through the Center for Excellence in Youth Education.
  • Student academic and career advisement, which supplement the existing faculty advisement program.
  • Faculty advising for nearly all student groups involved in youth education, community engagement, service learning and advocacy, as well as affinity groups.
  • Research support and mentorship in collaboration with various research centers and institutes in the areas of community-engaged scholarship and health disparities.
  • Access to faculty mentors for research and career advice.
  • Educational resources on the intersection of race, racism, bias, culture, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity, spirituality, and medicine and health in medical education.
  • Cubicles for students to check email and do limited printing and faxing.
  • Resources and advice to students interested in service learning, community-engagement, policy and advocacy, and public and urban health issues.
  • Coaching, advice, and mentoring for individuals interested in applying to Icahn Mount Sinai’s MD, PhD, and other academic programs.

United in Solidarity

The Mount Sinai community is committed to addressing the issues of bias and racism. Our goal is for Mount Sinai to become an anti-racist health care and learning institution that intentionally addresses structural racism. We will work to create an inclusive and equitable environment where all feel they belong.
