Message From the Chair

Welcome to the Alfred and Gail Engelberg Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Our team is dedicated to patient care, education, and research that is focused on medically underserved communities, racial, and ethnic health disparities in health care and health outcomes, and the time-honored principles of family medicine.

Founded in 2012, our Department aims to catalyze innovation and service in the field of family medicine for historically disadvantaged communities that experience the poorest health outcomes. We believe in high-quality, affordable health care for all. Our practices are evidence-based and informed by a spirit of equity and accountability to the communities we serve. We challenge systems that provide inequitable care to those covered by Medicaid and the uninsured, in addition to battling state and federal governments to ensure adequate reimbursements to the providers who care for these families. We are committed to culturally sensitive service and to bringing the benefits of health information technology to all patients.

There is a deep and worsening crisis in U.S. health care, precipitated in part by a shortage of primary care physicians. Our family medicine residency programs are central to our mission of health care for all. Our faculty is extraordinarily dedicated, talented, and diverse. Three of our four residency programs are based at federally qualified health center sites, with strong hospital partnerships for inpatient training. A wide range of community partners also provide experiences for residents in addressing social determinants of health, advancing public policy, and developing leadership skills. We are delighted to be able to offer this training experience to the next generation of physicians.

As we expand our research and training opportunities, we focus on broad collaboration with our colleagues across the Mount Sinai Health System, community leaders, and residents of the neighborhoods we serve. We hope you will join us as we work to advance the practice of family medicine to improve health in New York City and the mid-Hudson Valley of New York.
