Clerkship & Post-Clerkship Phases

The third year of your medical education begins during the sixth or seventh year of the Program.

To help facilitate your transition from the PhD Phase to clinical practice, we offer the MD-PhD Clinical Refresher course. This course helps students feel confident as their transition into their clinical training where they will have hands-on experience in patient care, clinical reasoning, and clinical knowledge. During this time, students will decide on their post-graduation plans.

During post-clerkship phase, you will apply and interview for residency. You will receive ample elective time and the ability to design a course tailored to your interests and professional goals. This flexibility—along with rotations at potential residency sites, scholarly work —will provide the experience and training you need to succeed as a resident and future physician-scientist.

“I view my Medical Scientist Training Program training as one of the most significant experiences of my life.  My training helped me to learn how to think critically about questions and problem solve, providing me with skills not only for my professional career but also for my personal development as well.”

“I will say: the MD-PhD program is really hard! There were so many times I wondered if I could do it. But what was really special were the type of people who came to Mount Sinai—they were talented, caring, and we all helped each other through our low times. They were a family we created, and I’ll forever treasure them.”
