The Precision Immunology Institute’s (PrIISM) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Mission Statement

The Precision Immunology Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (PrIISM) promotes and supports diversity, equity, inclusion, collaboration, innovation, and creativity in immunological clinical treatment and care, research, and education to improve human health. We work to develop and maintain a nurturing and supportive environment that allows all members of our community to thrive and contribute to the effort toward achieving equity in science and medicine.

We embrace the rich perspectives and lived experiences that exist within our PrIISM community. However, we also recognize the impact that social injustices, including racism, continue to exert in our nation. Therefore, we are committed to fostering institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai by:

  • Recruiting and training students and postdocs from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences
  • Hiring and mentoring faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences
  • Recruiting and serving a diverse patient population that reflects the communities we serve
  • Working actively to challenge and respond to bias, harassment, and discrimination within PrIISM and our diverse patient community
  • Pursuing deliberate efforts to ensure that PrIISM is an inclusive environment that respects and nurtures the talents of everyone, regardless of race or ethnicity, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, language, culture, national origin, religious commitment, age, disability status, or political perspective

We must address these issues to fulfill our mission of conducting innovative, meaningful, and relevant immunological research, training the next generation of scientists, teaching the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai student body, and serving the scientific community and the public. To this end, the PrIISM Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee is developing initiatives focused on three areas:

  • Engaging local youth in science
  • Increasing diversity at the student, postdoc, staff and faculty levels
  • Creating an inclusive institute
