The Nash Family Department of Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is home to a vibrant community of scientists advancing our understanding of the brain and its role in health and disease. Our Department brings together world-class expertise in molecular, systems, and computational neuroscience, alongside emerging strengths in brain–body science and neuroimmunology. Building on this foundation, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of discovery and shaping the future of neuroscience.

We are entering an exciting period in which new technologies and interdisciplinary approaches are transforming our ability to understand the brain. Our vision is to build on the extraordinary strengths of our faculty by more closely connecting fundamental mechanistic discoveries with human biology and disease. Through deeper partnerships between basic and clinical neuroscience, expanded access to human biospecimens, and new opportunities for interdisciplinary research, we aim to accelerate the path from discovery to meaningful advances in the understanding and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. We recognize that the brain does not function in isolation, and we are particularly excited by opportunities to uncover how immune, metabolic, social, and environmental factors interact with the nervous system to shape brain function and behavior.

Equally important to our scientific mission is our commitment to the people who make discovery possible. We strive to foster an open and collaborative environment in which faculty, staff, and trainees are empowered to pursue ambitious ideas, learn from one another, and reach their full potential. Through strategic faculty development, innovative training programs, and sustained investment in mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration, we aim to cultivate the next generation of neuroscience leaders and ensure that our Department remains a destination for outstanding scientific talent.

As Chair, I am honored to build on the remarkable achievements of our faculty, trainees, and staff and to help lead the Department into its next phase of growth and discovery. By bringing together a broad range of scientific perspectives, embracing new scientific opportunities, and strengthening connections across the Mount Sinai community, we have an extraordinary opportunity to advance fundamental neuroscience while developing new approaches to improve human health.
