Student and Trainee Mental Health Program

The Student and Trainee Mental Health Program (STMH) provides confidential mental health services to all medical and graduate students, as well as residents, clinical fellows, and postdoctoral trainees at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, with no out-of-pocket costs. Our services include initial consultation, psychotherapy, counseling, medication management, and referrals. We offer both virtual and in-person services, as well as evening appointments.

Students and trainees most commonly reach out to us for adjustment difficulties, burnout, depression, anxiety, and attentional symptoms. We are here to help and dedicated to connecting you to the resources you need, right now.

Our Services

Any student or trainee navigating mental health issues can request an initial appointment by calling 212-659-8805, or by emailing the Student and Trainee Mental Health Program. These calls are always confidential. Students can also set up an initial appointment through our online scheduling system in MARC.

In addition to initial evaluations and crisis interventions, we offer short-to-intermediate term individual psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and group psychotherapy. Recent group offerings have focused on managing social anxiety, fostering organizational skills to deal with ADHD, navigating LGBTQIA+ identity, and processing racial trauma.

Our licensed therapists have expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, anger management, multicultural psychology, and ADHD treatment. They are also experts in racial and ethnic minority mental health, behavioral health promotion, LGBTQIA+ mental health and wellness, and treating substance use disorders.

If needed, we can additionally provide outside referrals for psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. We can connect you with intensive outpatient services, dialectical behavioral therapy programs, and specialized treatment options. We also offer group psychotherapy at STMH. Learn more about our upcoming groups.

Billing and Insurance

Our confidential mental health services are available to all eligible students and trainees, regardless of insurance plan, with no out-of-pocket costs. The Student and Trainee Mental Health Program bills your insurance directly, but we do not charge co-pays, deductibles, or co-insurance. An explanation of benefits might be generated from the insurance carrier—but this is not a bill.

If you receive a bill for services provided by STMH, please bring it to the attention of our administrative staff. For those seeking long-term service or those preferring to see a provider outside of Mount Sinai, STMH can perform an initial assessment, then provide suitable referrals. Please note that treatment outside the Student and Trainee Mental Health Program typically requires payment.

24/7 Support

We have partnered with WellConnect to establish a dedicated mental health support and crisis hotline number. This hotline connects you to trained behavioral health counselors who use evidence-based policies and practices. For anyone experiencing a mental health crisis after hours or on weekends, we encourage you to call 212-241-2400 or 1-866-640-4777 (school code: ICAHN).

WellConnect also offers other services and resources such as legal and financial consultations, five free short-term counseling sessions, and more. To help you navigate all the services available, STMH has provided the following information about who to call in each situation.
