Education

The Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai offers diverse training programs to all members of an interdisciplinary team—from medical students to postdoctoral fellows. The Department specializes in treatment of people with acute neurological injuries, cord injuries, and our students also gain experience evaluating and treating individuals with a variety of other conditions including limb loss; musculoskeletal, orthopedic, and cardiac conditions; and people who have experienced organ transplant. Training opportunities are available in our inpatient rehabilitation units, outpatient services, and acute care services.

The Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance offers a Doctoral Internship in Clinical Psychology, a one-year program that provides foundational training in clinical psychology. The goal of the internship is to provide the opportunity for doctoral students to develop competence in the application of psychological knowledge and practice clinical problems in a medical center setting. As the primary setting for this internship is a rehabilitation medicine department, emphasis is placed on clinical experiences in work with individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Our program follows a professional practitioner model of clinical training. Trainees gain over 2,000 hours of supervised clinical experience, meeting the licensing requirements for one year of doctoral supervised clinical training. Six licensed full-time psychologists supervise our interns, and we accept three interns per year.

Our program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers and is accredited by the American Psychological Association.

For more information, contact Sabrina T. Breed, PhD, Director of Doctoral Training in Clinical Psychology, via e-mail or 212-241-6103.

Housed within the Mount Sinai’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and Human Performance, our Predoctoral Externship in Rehabilitation Psychology and Clinical Neuropsychology offers 3 externship positions in acute inpatient rehabilitation psychology for the 2026-2027 academic year. The goal of our externship is to expose externs to an inpatient multidisciplinary approach to patient care, and to provide them with unique training opportunities in areas of trauma, medical disability, brain injury, spinal cord injury, limb loss, behavioral medicine, brief neuropsychological assessment, and cognitive remediation. Upon completion of their training year, externs will have a greater understanding of how – in the acute phase of recovery – physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities may impact functioning at the individual, familial, and societal levels.
