Teaching & Education

Our vision is to be regionally and nationally recognized as outstanding bedside and didactic teachers and as innovators in curriculum development. We want to develop physicians who are confident and comfortable at the bedside, evidence-based, and able to navigate any issue within the context of today’s ever-changing and demanding health care system. Our division is committed to the education of future physicians and the improvement of practicing physicians. As part of this endeavor, our faculty are involved in virtually all aspects of education at The Mount Sinai Hospital.

Innovation Through Education

The Division of Hospital Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai plays a leading role in medical education at every level throughout the medical school and the Mount Sinai Health System. Our faculty hold key leadership positions and are actively involved in various aspects of the curriculum and are actively engaged in teaching medical students throughout their four years of education. In the Art and Science of Medicine course, our faculty teach and precept first- and second-year students, helping them develop essential skills in history-taking, physical examination, and patient presentation.

The Division also plays a significant role in the In Focus course, which spans multiple years. Many of our faculty teach and lead various components of this course. During their third-year clerkship and fourth-year acting internship, medical students have ample opportunities to interact with and learn from our hospitalists during daily rounds and lectures on clinically relevant topics. Additionally, fourth-year students can participate in a hospitalist elective, working closely with one of our hospitalists and a nurse practitioner on our non-teaching service.

The Division of Hospital Medicine plays a crucial role in the Mount Sinai Internal Medicine Residency, with several faculty members holding leadership positions. Our hospitalists are the primary educators on the general medicine teaching service, with a strong emphasis on bedside teaching and presentations. We believe that this hands-on approach is the cornerstone of our residency education efforts.

The Division has developed several innovative programs to enhance the educational experience for our residents. The Career Hospitalist Advisement and Mentorship Program provides guidance and support to house staff considering a career as an academic hospitalist. The program includes longitudinal follow-up, education on interviewing, and networking opportunities. Additionally, the Health Care Leadership Track, which the Division has led for many years, allows selected house staff to develop expertise in practice management, quality and safety principles, and education. This track equips residents with the essential skills needed to become successful physician leaders in the evolving health care landscape.

The Division also runs several innovative conferences for residents on patient safety/quality and high-value care. These conferences provide unique learning opportunities and showcase the Division's commitment to creating cutting-edge educational experiences for the residency program.

A culture of support and development is at the heart of all Division of Hospital Medicine activities. We are committed to helping members deliver outstanding patient care, achieve career fulfillment, and become local and national leaders in medical education and research. Our Division provides a robust mentorship program where faculty meet with a senior faculty member at least quarterly to discuss opportunities for career growth. Continuous education is provided through weekly division grand rounds (attended by nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and hospitalists), along with a Faculty Development Series. This biweekly session focuses on improving skills in teaching, quality improvement, and research, as well as enhancing knowledge in the business and operations of academic medicine. The division places particular importance on collaboration amongst colleagues. Our monthly Works in Progress meeting gives hospitalists a chance to share ideas, present research and other projects, and get feedback from the entire division.
