Student Events

Each year, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai coordinates several major student events, including Orientation, the White Coat Ceremony, Match Day, Commencement, and Medical Student Research Day.

Student Awards and Distinctions

At Icahn Mount Sinai, your performance in clinical, research, and community outreach settings can lead to recognition through student awards and acceptance to honor societies. Our opportunities for acknowledgment include the following.

Gold Humanism Honor Society

This society recognizes students who have distinguished themselves by their humanism, which the Gold Foundation defines as "those attributes and behaviors that emanate from a deep sensitivity and respect for others, including full acceptance of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds…exemplified through the compassionate, empathetic treatment of all persons." Peer nomination occurs at the end of the third year and selection takes place in July.

MD, PhD, and Dual Degree Achievement Awards

Icahn Mount Sinai offers several achievement awards for MD, PhD, and dual degree students. We encourage anyone interested to review all our available achievement awards.

Distinction in Medical Education

The Distinction in Medical Education recognizes students who have taken leadership roles in medical education or who have developed and implemented a scholarly project related to the field of medical education. It is given to those who have dedicated significant time to—and demonstrated excellence in—teaching, mentoring, education administration, curriculum development or assessment, or those who have taken a scholarly approach to their work in education.

Distinction in Research

The Distinction in Research is a graduation award that recognizes medical students for their outstanding contribution to research. To be eligible, medical students must have a manuscript accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal that meets one of the following two conditions: as a first author, to a journal with an impact factor greater than or equal to two (in the year of publication or two years prior to publication), or as a second author to a journal with an impact factor greater than or equal to 10 (in the year of publication or two years prior to publication).

Distinction in Community Service – Global Health

This distinction recognizes graduating students who have shown dedication to meaningful and ethical work that impacts the health and wellness of underserved and/or marginalized communities, including global communities, during their time at Icahn Mount Sinai. This distinction may be earned through scholarly work, education, leadership, service, and/or advocacy. Student recipients typically distinguish themselves by assuming a significant level of responsibility and leadership in the planning and implementation of initiatives, activities, programs, among other types of endeavors.
